Should have – Poem for 4-1-11

I should have been forgiving

I should have said “I still love you”

But I am a mere human

and should is a winged creature

sweeping in on dark feathers

In two common varieties

“Should ” and blacker “Shouldn’t”

Often the cross breed, Shouldn’t have

Perches on my shoulder

Stuffing infectious guilt into my ears

Harmonizing with it’s mate nesting in my memories.

The two ruthlessly tease

indifferent lumbering reality takes no notice of these things

until I wander into it’s claws

in search of the golden plumed Should be.
